Professionals

This page is aimed at Professionals working within agencies such as Health and Social Care, Local Authorities and the Public Sector who may wish to refer into the SARC, or familiarise themselves with our services. If you would like further information or training from the West Midlands Children and Young Persons Service, please get in touch via wmppaeds.sarc@nhs.net or by calling 0808 196 2340.

Our Service

The West Midlands Children and Young Persons Service offers a range of support services to children and young people in Staffordshire, West Midlands, West Mercia and Warwickshire, who have experienced sexual abuse or sexual violence, either recently or in the past.

Children and young people can can be referred into our Sexual Assault Referral Centres (SARCs) by the Police and other professionals, such as Social Care. For young people over the age of 13, we also have a self-referral pathway (which allows the young person to access our service without police involvement).

If you are concerns about a child and would like them to attend our service, please follow the guidance below.

  • If the child is under 13, contact the Police and Children’s Social Care (who will arrange an appointment at the SARC).
  • If the young person is 13 or older, you can still contact the Police or Social Care, but the young person can also self-refer (without Police involvement). You can help them to do this by contacting us directly on 0808 196 2340.

Medical Examinations for Children

Medical examinations are conducted by either our Forensic Physician's (Doctors) or Forensic Medical Examiners (Nurses). Both clinical roles are specially trained in forensic skills and maintain specialist paediatric competencies.

This video from the CSA Centre, offers a good overview of the medical examination in CSA cases. Please take a look to learn more.

Open Days

The West Midlands Children and Young Persons Service holds Open Days (these have been postponed due to COVID-19), which allow professionals from various agencies to attend the SARC. Attendees will receive a tour following the journey of referred children and young people, understand the roles of the team throughout the process, and network with other professionals. If you would like to attend an open day, please get in touch using the Contact Us page.
